Bromides
(Wiki)
Bromides, specifically potassium bromide, proved to be the first
medication able to control epiliepsy, having been discovered in 1857.
The drug was to remain alone in it's field for
over half a century and was eventually superseded
by phenobarbital in 1912. The drug is still used as an anticonvulsant in veterinary circles. It proved
useful as a sedative but exhibited many side effects due to a very narrow window of
opportunity in therapeutic terms.
